Get your bike ready for the new season. A practical guide to spring maintenance: brakes, chain, tires, safety and small gadgets for a comfortable ride. You can do the basic inspection at home - without service and without stress.
Once the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, bikes will once again fill the bike paths, parks and city streets. But before you go on your first spring ride, it pays to take care of your bike. Correct spring maintenance increases safety, extends the life of components and significantly improves driving comfort.
Why spring bike inspection is so important
A bike that has been sitting in a garage, basement or wheelhouse for several months may have minor hidden problems. Low tire pressure, a dirty chain or loose brakes are common. Spring is the perfect time to get your bike in shape - before it lets you down in traffic.
1. Wheels and tires: the basis of safe driving

Start with the simplest, which has a huge impact on both comfort and safety.
Check:
- condition of the casings (cracks, worn sample),
- tire pressure (recommendations can be found on the side of the tire),
- valves - should be firm and undamaged.
Tip: Underinflated tires increase pedaling effort and the risk of a puncture. You will know the correct pressure immediately - the bike rides more easily and more confidently.
2. Brakes: no compromise
Brakes are key - especially in the city.
- test whether the brake levers engage smoothly,
- check brake pad wear,
- For "caps" and disc brakes, check that the wheel does not "jerk" when braking.
A small rule: If you are not sure about the functionality of the brakes, do not postpone the service. Safety always comes first.
3. Chain and gears: quiet operation and less wear

The chain is the heart of the drive and often suffers the most.
Spring minimum:
- clean the chain (with a cloth or a brush),
- use a suitable lubricant for cyclo chains,
- turn the cranks briefly to spread the grease evenly.
At the same time, try the fluidity of the shifting. If the derailleur skips or shifts inaccurately, it may be a minor adjustment.
4. Frame, bolts and saddle: the details that make the difference
After winter, it is worthwhile to walk the bike "from top to bottom".
- check the tightening of the screws (seat, handlebars, carrier),
- adjust the saddle to the correct height - the knee should be slightly bent when stepping down,
- wipe the frame with a damp cloth to reveal any cracks or damage.
Bonus: A clean bike is not only prettier, but it also reveals technical problems better.
5. Lights, reflectors and safety
Spring brings more light, but don't underestimate safety.
Don't forget to check:
- front and rear light functionality,
- battery status or charging,
- reflectors on the bike and on the pedals.
Recommendation: A helmet should be a matter of course – not only for children, but also for adults. A properly fitted helmet significantly reduces the risk of injury.
6. A small piece of equipment that is worth having with you

Even a short ride can surprise. Fits in your pocket or bag:
- spare inner or gluing,
- small pump,
- pocket multi-key.
It takes up almost no space and can save a trip.
When to consider service?
If the bike has been standing for a long time, shifts inaccurately, makes unusual noises or you have doubts about the brakes, a professional service is a reasonable choice. Sometimes a minor adjustment is enough, other times the replacement of worn parts.
