Spring is the most beautiful time of the year for every gardener and lover of balcony cultivation. We have prepared a clear guide to planting adapted to Czech conditions.
Spring planting - when and what?
The Czech climate is unstable, so the most important rule is: don't rush it. The key date is approximately May 15 – the day of the frozen men (St. Pankrác, Servác and Bonifác).
February - March:
- Start pre-growing ingredients inside: tomatoes, peppers, basil, parsley.
- Pansies, peas and tulip bulbs can be planted on the balcony in a sheltered position.
April:

- Pansies, daffodils and hyacinths can handle temperatures around 0 °C.
- Also plant geraniums (geraniums) - but in a sheltered spot or bring them inside at night.
- You can plant lettuce, spinach and onions in the bed.
After May 15:
- Only now safely out with tomatoes, peppers, basil, petunias, geraniums and verbena.
- Cucumbers and zucchini are suited to a soil temperature of at least 15 °C.
Plants for sunny balconies and terraces

- Geraniums (geraniums) – undemanding, colorful and long-flowering
- Petunias – they look magical in hanging baskets
- Verbena and lobelia - great for hanging containers
- Lavender – smells good, attracts bees and is undemanding
- Cherry tomatoes – practical and decorative at the same time
Plants for semi-shaded and shaded balconies

- Begonia – abundant flowering even without direct sun
- Fuschie – elegant overhanging flowers
- Hosta – distinctive leaves in various shades of green
- Impatiens – undemanding, blooming all summer
- Ferns - add a jungle effect
Ideas for plant combinations

Try the combination of geranium + lobelia + verbena for a classic, colorful effect. For a modern minimalist balcony, try lavender + sage + rosemary. You can create a romantic balcony with climbing hydrangea, fuchsia and white petunias.
Decoration for a cozy balcony

- Light chains (LED) for an evening atmosphere
- Wooden or wicker boxes instead of plastic
- Small folding table and chair made of rattan or bamboo
- Jute or terracotta accessories for natural aesthetics
